Academia Island is home to a school for brilliant young scientists devoted to building a better future. Among its students are Yuusuke Amamiya, Jou Oohara, Megumi Misaki, Takuji Yano, and Mari Aikawa, who work together on powered suit research for space exploration.

Their peaceful studies are shattered when three of Academia's most gifted students, Kenji Tsukigata, Rui Senda, and Go Omura, accept an invitation from the mysterious Great Professor Bias and join the Armed Brain Army Volt. During their defection, Kenji murders Takuji and Mari, leaving Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi devastated.

Two years later, Volt returns and destroys Academia Island. Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi survive and discover that their former classmates have become Doctor Kemp, Doctor Mazenda, and Doctor Obler. Using the technology left behind by their fallen friends and mentors, the three transform into Liveman to stop Volt and avenge the future stolen from Academia.

The conflict becomes even more personal when Tetsuya Yano and Junichi Aikawa, the younger siblings of Takuji and Mari, join the team as Black Bison and Green Sai. Together, the five Livemen fight Volt's monsters, machines, and former friends who have sacrificed their humanity in pursuit of intelligence, beauty, and power.

As the war escalates, the truth behind Great Professor Bias is revealed. His promise of a world ruled by genius hides a darker plan to harvest brilliant minds and complete the Giga Brain Wave, a weapon intended to grant him immortality and control over humanity.
